Rope Barriers
Rope barriers — also sold as VIP stanchions, velvet rope posts, bollards or barrier posts — a post with a ring under the top and a rope slung between posts. This is the system for standing still and looking smart: a red carpet, a gallery, a hotel foyer, a function room, a car on a showroom floor.
The ring takes up to four ropes off a single post, so one post can be a corner, a junction where a queue splits, or the centre of a cross. Posts come in polished stainless silver, polished gold, matte black and black with gold, in a classic and a heavier range.
Ropes are sold separately in two lengths, and the two use different clip sizes — so match the rope to the ring on your post, and check the product page before you order. Our ropes are braided, which holds its shape and its colour better than the alternatives. Velvet can be ordered in if a room calls for it.

Classic or premium — which post do you need?
Both ranges do the same job and take the same ropes. The difference is weight, height and the shape of the base, and the right answer depends on how hard the post has to work rather than how it looks in a photograph.
The classic post is the slimmer of the two, on a flat round base. It is the one for a room where the line is advisory — a gallery, a function room, a showroom, a queue that forms for twenty minutes and then disappears. It is lighter to carry and takes up less floor, which matters when the posts go out and come back every event.
The premium post is taller and noticeably heavier, on a cone-shaped base. Height and mass are what you are buying: a taller post reads as a boundary from further away, and the extra ballast is what stops it walking when people lean on the rope or brush past it all day. This is the range for a hotel foyer, a entrance that is in use from open to close, or anywhere the barrier is part of the fit-out rather than something that gets packed away.
A practical test: if the posts will be moved more than once a week, the classic range is easier to live with. If they will stand in one place and be touched constantly, buy the heavier one and stop thinking about it.
What these are called
Rope barrier, rope stanchion, VIP rope, velvet rope, red carpet post, barrier post, queue post, crowd control post, bollard, museum barrier, gallery rope. The names come from where people first saw one; the object is a weighted post with a ring under the head and a rope slung between posts.
Laying out a queue that works
Most of the complaints about rope barriers are really complaints about layout.
Leave room for the person, not the rope. Allow roughly a metre of width per lane so people can stand without touching the rope on either side, and more if your customers carry bags, push prams or use wheelchairs. A lane that is too narrow gets stepped over, and once one person steps over it the line stops existing.
Start the line where people arrive, not where you want it to end. A queue forms from the entrance backwards. If the first post is not visible from the door, people will form their own line and you will spend the day redirecting them.
Leave a gap at the service end. The last post should sit back from the counter, not against it, so the person being served is not pinned against a rope and the next person has somewhere to stand.
For a long wait, fold the line. A serpentine run of two or three lanes holds far more people in the same floor area than a straight line, and it keeps the end of the queue away from the door. For a short wait, a single straight run looks tidier and is faster to walk.
When a rope barrier is the wrong tool
Worth saying plainly, because it saves returns.
- Outdoors. These are indoor posts. Wind catches the rope and the base is not designed to be weighted further.
- Uneven or sloped ground. A flat base needs a flat floor. On a slope or on grass the post leans and eventually goes over.
- Crowd pressure. A rope marks a line that people agree to respect. It is not a physical restraint and will not hold back a crowd that decides to move. For genuine containment you need a different class of barrier entirely.
- Anywhere small children are unsupervised. A rope at adult waist height is at head height for a child, and a post that can be pulled over is heavy enough to hurt. Belt barriers have the same issue; the answer is supervision rather than equipment.
Keeping the finish looking right
A polished post is a mirror, and mirrors show fingerprints. On a reception desk or a gallery entrance where the posts are in close view, that is the thing people notice first.
A dry microfibre cloth takes marks off polished stainless; wipe in one direction rather than circles, and keep a cloth with the posts so it gets done in the morning rather than once a month. Avoid abrasive cream cleaners, which dull the polish permanently. A matte black finish hides handling far better, so if the posts live somewhere they will be touched constantly and nobody will be polishing them, choose the darker finish and save yourself the job.
Store posts upright rather than stacked on their sides. Stacked bases scratch each other, and the scratch is on the part people see.
Rope barrier FAQ
Do the posts come with ropes?
Some are sold as a set with a rope included and some are sold as a single post; the product page states which. If you are building a run, remember you need one fewer rope than posts — the ropes and accessories range covers the rest.
How many posts do I need?
Work it out from the distance you need to cover and the length of the rope, then add one post for the end of the run. Corners need a post but do not need an extra rope, because one post can carry ropes in two directions.
Can one post hold more than one rope?
Yes. The ring under the head takes several clips, which is what lets a single post serve as a corner, a junction where a line splits, or the centre of a cross.
Will a rope from another supplier fit?
It depends on the clip size rather than the brand. Measure the ring on the post and check it against the rope you are considering, and test one before buying a full run.
Rope barrier or retractable belt?
Rope for anything that is standing still and being looked at; belt for a queue that moves through. Belt posts also pack down faster, because the belt winds back into the post instead of having to be unclipped and carried. Where there is no floor space for posts at all, the wall mounted barriers do the same job from the wall.
Can I buy a matching post later?
Usually, but finishes can shift slightly between production runs, and a polished finish shows that more than a dark one. If the run is likely to grow, buying the whole set at once avoids the mismatch.
Do you supply for events rather than permanent use?
Plenty of our customers are event and venue companies. Tell us the number of posts, how many ropes and the date, and we will quote the set — and say so if the posts will be transported regularly, because that changes which range we would recommend.
Where do the posts sit in the wider range?
Under queue barriers and crowd control, alongside the belt and wall-mounted systems and the ropes, clips, hooks and spares that keep a run going.
