Fitting out an office, school or building

Visitors and staff read different things in different places. Each stop is one decision and the type of product that settles it.

Start here

Two questions cover most of a building: how does a visitor find the right room, and where do staff read what they are meant to read. The compliance notices are a third, and they need holders like everything else.

At the entrance

Get a visitor to the right place

A visitor arriving for the first time wants one thing: where to go. A directory at the door answers it before anybody is interrupted to ask, and a sign-in lectern gives reception a queue that forms itself.

You needA floor stand for directions and notices, a lectern where people sign in or read a list, and wall frames for the building directory itself.

Weighted poster standDirections, notices and visitor information at eye level.
Ring binder lecternA sign-in book or a directory that changes a page at a time.
Wall frameThe permanent directory, floor plan or evacuation diagram.
Adjustable heightSet it once, to the thing it actually refers to.
TipA lectern with a sign holder on top does the directory and the welcome notice in one footprint. In a lobby the constraint is floor space, not budget.
2

At the reception desk

Keep the desk working

The reception desk is the most contested surface in the building. Everything you can get off it makes it work better, and anything left on it has to earn the space.

You needCounter sign holders for the things people ask about, and a lockable box for suggestions, feedback, ballots or a collection.

Double-sided holderFor a desk people approach from both sides.
L-shape holderCosts less where the sign is only seen from the front.
Suggestion boxSolid and lockable, so nobody reads the last person’s note.
Collection boxClear, because people give more when they can see that others have.
TipDate-stamp anything temporary. A notice about an event that finished last term, still on the desk, tells every visitor how closely the place is run.

Corridors, waiting areas and noticeboards

Put information where people are standing still

Corridors, lift lobbies and waiting rooms are where people have nothing to do. That is the most valuable reading time in the building and most of it is spent looking at blank wall.

You needFrames for notices that change, wall racks for forms and guides people take with them, and a floor rack where one wall holder will not be enough.

Snap frameFour edges flip open. Change a notice without taking it off the wall.
Wall brochure holderForms, policies, course guides, event flyers, within reach.
Wall sign holderAmenities, room numbers, capacity and safety notices.
Floor rackFor a waiting area where people browse rather than glance.
TipWalk the route your visitors actually take before you drill. A holder on a wall nobody passes is a hole in the plasterboard, and a notice mounted above head height gets neither read nor reached.

Queues, events and access control

Close a space without building anything

Open days, enrolment, exams, elections, a corridor being cleaned, a stairwell closed after hours. A building closes and reopens parts of itself constantly, and the alternative to proper barriers is a chair with a sign taped to it.

You needBelt barriers that pack away, a wall unit for a boundary that is always in the same place, rope barriers for anything ceremonial, and spares so one damaged post does not retire a set.

Belt barrierPulls out for the queue, winds away when the day is over.
Wall mounted unitFor a doorway or stairwell closed on the same line every night.
Rope barrierGraduations, awards nights, official openings.
Posts with a sign holderClosed for cleaning, exam in progress, please wait here.
TipFor a boundary in the same place every time, a wall unit costs no floor space and cannot walk off. Keep the freestanding posts for the lines that move.

Buying for more than one site?

Most of what we ship goes to organisations fitting out several rooms or several locations at once. Send the quantities, the sizes and the delivery postcodes and we will price it as one order, freight included, so the figure you take to approval is the figure you pay. Orders are dispatched within one business day.
