How to Choose the Right Snap Frame Size for Your Business

May 2026  ·  5 min read  ·  Retail Signage Tips

Whether you're promoting a weekend special, directing customers through your store, or displaying a menu at the entrance — a snap frame is one of the most practical and cost-effective signage tools available. But with sizes ranging from A4 all the way up to A0, choosing the right one isn't always obvious.

"The wrong size frame isn't just an aesthetic problem — it's a missed opportunity to communicate with your customer at exactly the right moment."

What is a snap frame?

A snap frame — also called a click frame or snap lock poster frame — is an aluminium display frame with spring-loaded borders that snap open on all four sides. This lets you swap out posters, menus, or promotional graphics in seconds with no tools required. They're wall-mounted, lightweight, and available in a range of standard paper sizes.

Standard snap frame sizes at a glance

Size Dimensions Best for
A4 210 x 297 mm Counter tops, reception desks, small notices
A3 297 x 420 mm Cafe menus, retail promotions, office signage
A2 420 x 594 mm Window displays, in-store promotions
A1 594 x 841 mm Entrance signage, feature walls, high-traffic areas
A0 841 x 1189 mm Shopping centres, large retail floors, exhibitions

Choosing by location

Counter or reception area - A4 or A3

If you're placing signage on a desk, counter, or shelf — A4 is your starting point. It's compact, easy to read up close, and pairs well with a small footprint. Step up to A3 if you want something visible from a metre or two away, or if your content needs more breathing room.

Common uses: service desk notices, QR code displays, daily specials, loyalty program info.

Shop window - A2 or A3

Window displays need to catch attention from the footpath. A3 works well for smaller shopfronts or when displaying multiple frames side by side. A2 gives more visual impact when you have a single featured promotion.

Tip For window mounting, look for frames with adhesive or suction-cup fittings rather than screw-mount versions.

In-store walls and aisles - A2 or A1

Wall-mounted frames in retail aisles work best at A2 or A1. At these sizes, your signage is readable from 3-5 metres away — ideal for directing customers, highlighting offers, or reinforcing your brand beside product displays.

Common uses: promotional signage beside product bays, seasonal campaign displays, wayfinding.

Entrance and feature walls - A1 or A0

If you want a frame that commands attention the moment someone walks through the door, go A1 or A0. These are the sizes you see in shopping centres, hotel lobbies, gyms, and large retail stores. Best mounted at eye level on a prominent wall.

The quick decision rule: viewing distance

Viewing distance Recommended size Typical location
Under 1 m A4 Counter displays, desk signage, QR codes
1 - 3 m A3 or A2 Window displays, wall promotions
3 - 5 m A1 Entrance walls, aisle ends, feature zones
5 m + A0 Shopping centres, large retail floors

25 mm vs 32 mm profile

Beyond paper size, snap frames come in two profile widths. The 25 mm slim profile is the most common — modern-looking and suited to most retail and office environments. The 32 mm heavy duty profile has a chunkier border and is better for high-traffic areas where frames may be knocked, or where you want a more premium look.

Portrait or landscape?

Most snap frames can be mounted either way — just rotate the frame before fixing it to the wall. Match the orientation to your printed artwork. It sounds obvious, but it's a surprisingly common mix-up when ordering in bulk.
