Acrylic Menu Holders & Counter Sign Holders

The holder is a frame. The sentence inside it does the work.

A counter sign holder is cheap and lasts years. What determines whether it earns its place is the piece of paper in it, and that is the part most businesses put the least thought into.

One message per holder. A card that lists five things gets read as decoration. A card that says one thing gets read as information. If you have five things to say, you need either five holders in five places or a decision about which four do not matter.

Say the thing, not the category. “Specials” tells a customer nothing. The actual special, with its price, tells them whether to order it. The same applies to “New in”, “Offers” and “Information” — they are labels on an empty box.

Put the price on it. A sign at the point of decision that answers “how much” removes the main reason someone walks away without asking.

Date-stamp anything temporary. A sign for an offer that ended in March, still sitting on the counter in June, costs more credibility than it ever earned in sales. If it has an end date, write the end date on it, so the staff member wiping the counter knows to take it out.

Where on the counter it should sit

At the point where the decision happens, facing the direction people arrive from. That sounds obvious and it is routinely got wrong.

A sign about a product should stand beside that product, not at the till where the decision is already made. A sign about payment, loyalty or opening hours belongs at the till, where people are standing still. A sign about the menu belongs where the queue starts, so people can read while they wait rather than deciding at the counter and holding up the line behind them.

Keep it clear of the working area. A holder that sits where staff put down change, bags or coffee gets knocked over, pushed aside and eventually put in a drawer. If the counter is busy, a double-sided holder on the back bench, facing out, survives better than a single-sided one in the middle of the action.

Printing the insert

This is where the complaints come from, and all of it is avoidable.

• Paper that is too light will not stand up. Standard office copy paper curls and slumps inside a holder, especially in a kitchen or anywhere humid. A heavier stock — the weight of a business card is too much, the weight of a decent letterhead is about right — stays flat and looks deliberate.
• Paper that is too heavy will not seat. Mounted board and thick laminate may not fit the slot. If you intend to laminate, check the holder takes it before you laminate a hundred of them.
• Keep text away from the edges. The holder overlaps the print slightly on each side, and a price that disappears behind acrylic is worse than no price at all.
• Print the back as well on a double-sided holder. A blank reverse faces half your customers. If you have nothing else to say, print the same thing twice.
• Print spares. The insert is the part that gets spilled on, and a stack of ten in the drawer means the sign is replaced in seconds rather than at the end of the month.

How many do you actually need?

Count the decision points, not the surfaces. A café with one till and six tables needs one holder at the queue, one at the till and six on the tables, and those three groups carry different messages. A retail counter usually needs fewer than it ends up with, because every leftover sign from a previous promotion stays out.

The useful discipline is a fixed number of holders. When everything has a place and there are no spare holders sitting around, adding a new message means deciding which old one comes down, which is exactly the decision that should be made.

What actually fails

These are simple objects and they fail in predictable ways. A base cracks because the holder was knocked off a counter, which is a placement problem more than a product one. A slot stretches because inserts thicker than it was designed for have been forced in repeatedly. Yellowing and brittleness come from sunlight, which is why a holder in a window dies within a season while the identical one on the back counter lasts for years.

None of that is expensive to fix, but it is worth knowing when deciding where to put one.

Will the insert slide out if the holder is knocked?

Inserts sit in a slot and are held by friction, not by a clip, so a sharp knock can dislodge one. On a table where things get moved around, a double-sided holder with the insert enclosed on both faces holds better than an open-backed one.

Can I use laminated cards?

Usually, but laminate adds thickness. If you are laminating a whole set, laminate one first and check it slides in without forcing before committing.

Can these be wiped down with the rest of the counter?

Wipe the holder with a damp cloth, yes. Do not spray cleaner at it — the spray drifts onto the clear faces, and the cleaners used on counters are exactly the ones that damage clear plastic. Lift it, wipe under it, wipe the holder with a separate soft cloth, put it back.

Portrait or landscape?

Match it to the content rather than the counter. A list of items and prices reads naturally portrait. A single headline, an offer or a short instruction reads better landscape, and a landscape holder is also harder to knock over because it is wider than it is tall.

Can I use one for a menu in a cover?

Menu covers are usually thicker and often a non-standard size, so measure before ordering. For a full menu rather than a card, the menu stands and lecterns are built for the thickness.

What if I need it on a wall or the floor instead?
